Good euchre strategy starts with counting: call trump when you can expect three of the five tricks with your partner’s help — usually three trumps including a bower, or two trumps and an off-suit Ace. Your seat changes the math, because the dealer picks up the turned card. Below are the rules of thumb strong players use for calling, leading, going alone and defending.

How many trumps do you need to call?

  • Three trumps including the right or left bower: usually a call.
  • Two trumps with an off-suit Ace: a reasonable call, stronger with a bower.
  • Both bowers: call almost regardless of the rest.
  • Fewer than two trumps: pass unless you are the dealer with a strong picked-up card.

Count the turned card too: as dealer it joins your hand, and as the dealer’s partner you are giving it to your own team.

Your seat changes the call

Right of dealer (third)Order up only with strengthThe dealer gets the card and you lead last.

Calling “next” in the second round

If the dealer turns the card down, the suit of the same colour — called next — becomes attractive for the player to the dealer’s left. The dealer showed no interest in that colour, and the bower of the turned suit becomes the left bower in next. The opposite colours (“reverse next”) are a better choice for the dealer’s partner.

What to lead

  • If your partner called trump, lead a trump to help draw the opponents’ trumps.
  • If you called it yourself with the right bower, lead it and pull trumps.
  • On defence, lead an off-suit Ace or a short suit so you can trump in later.
  • Avoid leading trump into the makers when you are defending; you usually help them.

When to go alone

Go alone when you expect all five tricks without help: typically the right and left bower with the Ace of trump and a strong side card, or four trumps with an off-suit Ace. A successful loner scores 4 instead of 2. If you might lose one trick, you still score 1 — but a partner who could have covered a weak spot is often worth more.

Defending and getting euchred less

  • Defenders score 2 for a euchre, so make the makers earn their three tricks.
  • Hold on to a trump that can take an off-suit Ace later instead of spending it on an early trick your partner already wins.
  • Count trumps: there are seven in play, the right and left bowers plus five more.
  • At 9 points, the opponents need only a march; call more conservatively when they are close.

House rules you may meet

Two common house rules change strategy. Under “stick the dealer”, the dealer must name trump if everyone passes twice, so the dealer’s partner can pass more freely. A “farmer’s hand” lets a player holding only nines and tens (definitions vary) swap cards with the kitty. The euchre game on this site redeals a fully passed hand and uses neither rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best strategy in euchre?

Call trump with three expected tricks between you and your partner, lead trump when your side called it, lead off-suit Aces on defence and count the seven trumps as they fall.

How many trumps should you have to order up?

Usually three including a bower, or two with an off-suit Ace. Order up a little lighter as the dealer’s partner and a little stronger from the seat left of the dealer.

What does “next” mean in euchre?

The suit of the same colour as the card the dealer turned down. Calling it from the seat left of the dealer is a classic second-round play.

When should you go alone in euchre?

When you expect all five tricks yourself, typically both bowers plus the Ace of trump and a strong side card.
