Spades Practice Plan for Beginners: Your First Five Games

Before every turn, identify the suit of the first card and check your hand for that suit. If you can follow, do so. If you cannot, notice that you may use a spade or discard. Your aim in this session is to make legal choices without relying only on the highlighted cards.

Before bidding, separate likely winners from uncertain kings, queens and low trumps. After the hand, compare your estimate with what happened. Record one card you overvalued or one useful short suit you missed. Do not change your whole method after a single unlucky hand.

Ask who is winning the current trick before spending a high card. Keep a winner for later when a lower legal card lets your partner keep the trick. If your partner bids nil, change the exercise to covering their dangerous cards and notice when that conflicts with your own contract.

Check both teams’ bids, scores and accumulated bags before playing. Once your team has its contract, decide whether an extra trick serves a purpose. Do not throw away a safe contract just to avoid one bag; learn to distinguish protecting the bid from collecting unnecessary extras.

Pick one completed hand. Write down the bid, the tricks taken and the decision you would change. Was the problem estimation, wasting a trump, overtaking your partner or forgetting bags? Repeat the relevant earlier exercise. Move to a public or friends table when the basic turn flow feels comfortable.
